FORT GEORGE HAS GOLDEN YEAR

Astoria’s Fort George Brewery is riding high after winning an armload of prestigious beer awards this year.

Four gold medals will do that.

It was the best annual awards haul in the 17-year history of the brewery.

“Fort George really struck gold this year with all our medals,” said owner and co-founder Chris Nemlowill. “Our team just keeps getting better and, with our new facility on the waterfront, our beers are the best they’ve ever been.”

Even among so many rivals, City of Dreams stands out.

The brewery took home a gold medal for City of Dreams, a pale ale that serves as a sudsy tribute to the city, at the highly competitive World Beer Cup.

Fort George also won gold at the Oregon Beer Awards for Short Sands, a lager named after a prized North Coast beach.

Fudge Sickles, a barrel-aged stout, took top honors at the Great American Beer Festival. Krush Architect, a fresh hop IPA featuring Krush hops, won gold at the Best of Craft Beer Awards in Bend.

Astoria’s newest brewery, Obelisk Beer Co., also did well this year, garnering honors at a couple of major festivals.

Obelisk won gold at Great American for a collaboration IPA with No Boat Brewing in Snoqualmie, Wash., called Twenty-Fold Sword.

At the Oregon Beer Awards, Obelisk was named Best New Brewery, perhaps the greatest honor of all.

PROOF THERE IS A GOD: VORTEX MONTH

When Chris Nemlowill and Jack Harris opened Fort George Brewery 17 years ago, they put a beer on tap that was simply mind-blowing.
